Turbo upgrade options Volvo B230 engine

Getting more power out of a B230 is one of the first steps for many Volvo owners when it comes to tuning. A manual boost controller is a nice start to get to 160-180hp; for those who want more should look at a turbo upgrade!

TD04H-15G

A common upgrade is the turbocharger of a Volvo 850 T5. This one is well used because there are quite a few of this type of Volvo in the scrap yard by now. The turbo you will find on the T5 engine from an 850 is the TD04-15G which is a great replacement for the small standard TD04-13C. On a B230 turbocharged engine you can reckon around 220hp when combined with the right accompanying upgrades such as: chips, injectors etc.

The TD04H-15G is virtually “bolt-on” it can be easily mounted on the original manifold. Probably the turbo will have to be clocked to make sure the oil supply is coming from the top and the compressor housing is pointing the right way. Clocking a turbo is simply rotating the core, turbine housing or compressor housing relative to the other components.

Both turbos have a tapered flange which ensures that the original downpipe can be mounted without too many modifications.

TD04- 16T/18T/19T

Want to get it right the first time and boost power to around 300hp? The TD04 16T, 18T and 19T are frequently chosen and now proven options when it comes to achieving higher power outputs from a Volvo 740/940 B230 turbocharged engine. These turbochargers are also very available through various web shops from Sweden and Norway for around 600€. Used, you won’t often see these turbos pass by on ad sites like marketplace or Ebay.

Fitting these turbos requires other modifications to the Volvo besides fitting the correct injectors, chips/standalone ECU and large MAF. These turbochargers require some things to be clocked so that it can be used on the B230 engine. One consequence of clocking is that the wastegate actuator ends up in a different place. However, this is easily remedied with our wastegate actuator bracket which brings everything back to the correct position.

Another important item is the downpipe. These turbos use a flat flange instead of the tapered flange that the standard downpipe of a B230 engine has. This means that a custom downpipe must be made which, by the way, is recommended anyway to get the most out of these turbos. An upgrade to 3 inches is definitely recommended.
