For the Volvo 240, 740 and 940 there is a BC-Racing coilover set available; because Volvo has chosen to manufacture the strut and steering knuckle from 1 part this set is not 100% plug and play. The strut has to be cut, cleaned and then the coilover kit can be welded to the stub axle.

Since this is not something everyone can or wants to do themselves, LCM has the BC-Racing welding service. For €75.00 + €100.00 deposit we weld the coilover kit and deliver it as a plug and play set.

Spring struts shortening and cleaning

The struts need to be shortened so there is still a 50mm stub sticking out, this is needed as an extra hold for the coilover kit.

For the welding process it is very important that the material to be welded is completely blank and clean in. You can do this with a deburring wheel on an angle grinder and a file for the tricky corners.

Welding the coilover kit to the stub axle

Now that the knuckles are rust free and well degreased, they can be welded to the new BC-Racing set. BC-Racing’s kits are always very well packaged and are a delight when unpacked.

The shock absorber itself should not be heated. This is no problem at BC-Racing because the height can be adjusted separately from the spring tension. This means that the bushing that holds the strut can simply be unscrewed. This should then be slid over the stub axle piece.

FR = Front Right or front right.

After we are satisfied with the fit and have checked that we have actually taken the right side, 4 to 5 suture welds can be placed which will prevent any warping.

Then it can be welded in stages (I myself like to do it crosswise) with the MIG or TIG. I use the MIG in this situation.
