An oil filter removes dirt and wear particles from the engine oil. Every oil change should also include a fresh filter.

Pay attention to the thread, seal, height, and whether the filter fits the engine block or a modified oil filter housing. A poorly fitting filter can leak or provide insufficient flow.

When installing, always use some fresh oil on the rubber seal and do not overtighten the filter unnecessarily.
