An oil cooler helps keep oil temperature under control when the engine is under heavy load for extended periods. This is especially useful in turbo cars, track use, or high ambient temperatures.

Pay attention to size, thermostat, hose length, mounting location, and protection against stone chips. Oil running too cold is also not ideal, which is why a thermostatic setup is often advisable.
