Replace rubber buttons Volvo remote key
Car keys are used daily and are therefore subject to wear and tear. If you've just bought a new pre-owned Volvo that looks tip-top but has a worn set of rubber buttons, this can really detract from the experience of your new car.
Don't despair! I'll show you how to replace the rubber buttons in just a few minutes, making your key look like new again.
Supplies needed to replace the remote key's rubber buttons
To replace the rubber buttons on your Volvo key, you will need the following items:
- New rubber buttons
- Small screwdriver
- Thin knife
- Possibly nail scissors
Step 1: Remove the physical Volvo key from the remote
On the back of the remote's casing, there's a slider that needs to be moved to the left to remove the physical Volvo key.

Step 2: Use a small screwdriver to pry open the cover
After removing the physical key, an opening appears. Through this opening, the back cover of the key can be pried off with a small screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the cover
The cover of the housing can now be very easily removed with a thin knife (e.g., a paring knife).

Step 4: Remove the transmitter and rubber buttons from the key fob
The circuit board now visible is the key's brain (the transmitter). Handle it carefully.
This transmitter can be easily removed by turning the Volvo key over and pressing the rubber buttons. If done correctly, the transmitter should now detach from the housing.

Finally, also remove the rubber buttons from the Volvo key housing. The buttons can be easily pushed out.

Step 5: Compare the new rubber buttons with the old ones on your Volvo key
Before installing the new rubber buttons, it is advisable to lay the old and new ones side by side and compare them.

As shown above, the new rubber has a row of 3 at the bottom instead of 1. This can vary per key. By carefully trimming the outer 2 with nail scissors, you make both rubbers identical, and the assembly can be put back together.
Step 6: Reassemble and test the Volvo key
Finally, everything can be reassembled in reverse order, and you can enjoy a beautiful Volvo key with new buttons for many years to come.

Finally, go to your beautiful Volvo to test if all key functions are still working correctly.
