Volvo 240 BC-Racing Coilover Welding

For the Volvo 240, 740 and 940, a BC-Racing coilover kit is available; because Volvo chose to manufacture the strut and knuckle as one piece, this kit is not 100% plug and play. The strut needs to be cut, cleaned, and then the coilover kit can be welded to the knuckle.

Given that this is not something everyone can or wants to do themselves, LCM offers the BC-Racing welding service. For €75.00 + €100.00 deposit, we weld the coilover kit and deliver it as a plug and play set.

Shortening and cleaning the struts

The struts must be shortened so that a 50mm stub still protrudes; this is necessary as extra support for the coilover kit.

For the welding process, it is very important that the material to be welded is completely bare and clean. This can be done with a grinding disc on an angle grinder and a file for the tricky corners.

Welding the coilover kit to the knuckle

Now that the knuckles are free of rust and thoroughly degreased, they can be welded to the new BC-Racing kit. The BC-Racing kits are always very well packaged and are a pleasure to behold when unpacked.

The shock absorber itself should not be heated. This is not a problem with BC-Racing because the height can be adjusted independently of the spring tension. This means that the sleeve in which the strut sits can simply be unscrewed. This then needs to be slid over the knuckle piece.

After we are satisfied with the fit and have checked that we have indeed chosen the correct side, 4 to 5 tack welds can be placed, which can prevent warping.

Then it can be welded in stages (I prefer to do it crosswise) with the MIG or TIG. I use the MIG in this situation.
